A Pharmaceutical company that is partly owned by Microsoft billionaire Bill Gates has reported promising results from a drug some analysts say could rival Viagra in treating male impotence. Officials at Bothell, Wash.-based Icos Corp. said preliminary testing of its drug IC351 on men suffering from erectile dysfunction was “extremely positive,” and added that laboratory studies suggested the new drug might have fewer side-effects than Viagra. Produced by Pfizer Inc. of New York City, Viagra has become the United States’ top-selling drug since going on sale in April. Possible side-effects from Viagra, which is expected to be approved by Health Canada this fall, include indigestion, headaches and blue-tinged vision. Gates is Icos’s biggest shareholder, with a 12.6-per-cent interest in the firm.
